More details about our classes

Rachel is a dedicated and enthusiastic instructor who has made Cantonese learning something I look forward to every week! I started taking lessons to improve my communication with my girlfriend’s family, and in a few months of weekly lessons (starting from only knowing the phrase「好食!」), Rachel has helped me reach a level where I can understand and convey a lot of essential/basic information, and I’ve gotten to know my in-laws a lot better through language. Rachel shaped our lesson structure to my learning style & goals - we do a mix of writing review (starting out with jyut6ping3, then gradually mixing in characters), conversation, and vocab building that has kept the learning curve felt natural and just the right pace. 我好鍾意同Rachel老師學廣東話!

Student’s kind words

Rachel is an incredible tutor who tailors her lessons, content, and teaching style to each student. She is a flexible and collaborative professional who is well versed in teaching Cantonese and is constantly working to improve her teaching. She not only is active in developing modules for her students, but she is continuously learning new languages and improves her teaching from an understanding of both roles of thelesson.

As a fellow teacher, I respect her dedication to her work and could not reccomend a better person to learn Cantonese with. I've been learning with her for a few months and I've gone from knowing a couple of Cantonese words to holding simple conversations with my partner in Cantonese.

Lydia Walquist, student since July 2025.

"Rachel is an incredible language tutor who makes Cantonese learning fun! Starting to learn Cantonese as a complete beginner alongside my studies at the University of Oxford was always going to be a challenge, but within a few months I am already able to converse on a wide range of topics and socialise with my Hong Kong peers.

As a polyglot, Rachel can easily relate to and support her students' difficulties, such as tonal pronunciation, grammatical structures, and using colloquial language phrases. Cantonese is a notoriously hard language to learn, but I was surprised by the pace of my progress.

Whether you're looking to live in Hong Kong, an ABC wanting to reconnect with Cantonese, a multilingual nerd (like Rachel herself), or if you're simply curious about this beautiful language, I could not recommend her enough!"

Jeremy Azzopardi, student since June 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Reach out through our contact form or schedule a call, we’ll discuss your learning goals steps and answer any questions along the way.

  • We will work on your specific objectives, concepts that you feel stuck in, and conversation topics that are relevant to you. You will be given homework that targets your weaknesses. I'll also speak to you in Cantonese according to your level, challenging enough to stretch your abilities, but not so difficult that you feel overwhelmed. This ensures you build both skill and confidence in every single session, making visible progress that keeps you motivated.

  • I have been on both sides of the table. As someone who teaches Cantonese 30+ hours weekly while spending 3+ hours learning with my own tutors, I am constantly learning how to learn and teach languages better. I achieved conversational fluency in Spanish within a year and am currently tackling Japanese and Tagalog. My roles as both teacher and student gives me insights on which methods actually work because I use them myself.

Also, having been born and raised in Hong Kong. I know the subtle nuances of Cantonese that are used in everyday real-life conversations, and I can help you sound natural and authentic.

  • We offer both online and in-person classes. Online classes are held via Google Meet, in-person classes are held in the Central area in Hong Kong.

  • Most students have 1 to 2 sessions with my per week for accountability and progress tracking.

But at the end of the day, do whatever works for your lifestyle and schedule!
